Optimizing Energy Performance was sought by architect Lee Stevens at the direction of his client Voyageur Consortium Academy, Detroit. He had read about that concept in a previous issue of MasonryEdge/theStoryPole. He achieved an R-23.76 for the opaque High R masonry cavity wall system insulated with 3" of closed cell polyurethane spray foam, reaching 208% of code requirements. Voyageur had requested 20% over code based on their experience with high utility bills in previous leased buildings. This architect pushed the envelope when it came to envelope performance. Stevens will share results of energy monitoring in a future issue to see the added benefits of the thermal mass in the effective R-value.
